Boston Marathon winner John Korir says Monday evening’s victory was a massive day in the history of his family, his win coming 13 years since his elder brother Wesley won on the same terrain. The younger Korir clocked 2:04:45 to claim victory in a tightly contested race, with his elder brother Wesley waiting at the finish line to embrace him for victory.
Speaking to marvelbetgames.com immediately after his win, John was ecstatic and said the victory marked a massive milestone in his career.
This is really great and a huge win for our family. Wesley always encouraged me and pushed me to try and win it. His experience running here multiple times was useful as I prepared and having him here cheer me on was a massive morale booster for me. I wanted to make him and the family proud and that was one of the things that pushed me to go for the win and I am glad I managed to do so.
He had made an attempt at winning the title in the last edition, but finished fourth and had a massive determination to make it count, having won in Chicago late last year. He managed to recover from an early stumble to win and he told Telecomasia the determination to make history drove him.
I had to work really hard to recover from the early stumble. It did not deter me from carrying on and instead gave me a lot of strength. I knew I had prepared well and I could do it. I also had a lot of support especially from the crowd and that pushed me to gain the ground I had lost and go on to win.
After Boston, John will take a few weeks rest before deciding on his next venture, whether the World Championships or going back to defend his Chicago title.
