The management of Real Madrid has decided to change the name of its home stadium. According to Marca, the venue will no longer be called Santiago Bernabeu; its new name will simply be Bernabeu.
This change is driven by commercial motives. Simplifying the name is expected to make the stadium more appealing to advertising partners and sponsors.
The renovation of the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, which began in 2019, is nearing completion. The project was originally slated to be finished in 2022, but the timeline has shifted due to the COVID-19 pandemic and rising construction material costs.
The overall cost of the renovations is estimated to be around 1.76 billion euros, including interest on loans. To fund the project, Real Madrid have taken out several loans, the latest of which was a 370 million euro loan secured in October 2023, to be repaid over 30 years. It was previously reported that the club's home venue will host the final of the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
