Famous British sports site Give Me Sport has released its list of the most outstanding footballers to have ever played for national teams.
Contrary to expectations, neither Lionel Messi of Argentina nor Cristiano Ronaldo of Portugal topped the rankings. The title of the best player in the history of national teams was awarded to Brazilian forward Pelé, who remains the unique holder of three FIFA World Cup titles.
Lionel Messi came in second place. The Argentinian boasts a World Cup victory, Olympic gold medals, and two Copa América titles with the Argentina national team. Rounding out the top three is another Brazilian, Cafu, a defender who won the World Cup twice and had the honor of being captain of the national team in 2002.
Diego Maradona from Argentina took the fourth spot, and Spanish defender Sergio Ramos secured the fifth position. Cristiano Ronaldo was ranked only tenth on this list.
