Former Portugal Football Player Arrested on Domestic Violence Charges

Ruben Semedo, a former central defender for the Portugal national football team and current player for Qatari club Al-Gharafa, has been arrested in Lisbon on suspicion of domestic violence, according to Correio da Manha.

Details indicate that on December 29, the 30-year-old center-back allegedly attacked his girlfriend and held her against her will at home for several hours. The victim managed to escape. She is currently hospitalized with visible injuries, and it is expected that Semedo will be questioned by the police on December 30, after which a measure of restraint will be determined.

This is not the first legal trouble for the Portuguese player: in January 2018, the former defender of Sporting, Villarreal, and Olympiacos was arrested after threatening a nightclub employee in Valencia with a weapon, and in 2021, Semedo was detained in Athens on charges of gang rape. In both cases, the player was released after posting bail.

On October 15, former Monaco forward and UEFA Nations League 2020/2021 winner Wissam Ben Yedder appeared in court charged with committing sexual violence while intoxicated, receiving a suspended two-year prison sentence and a fine.
