Former Formula 1 driver and expert Martin Brundle believes George Russell’s future at Mercedes could be uncertain if current four-time world champion Max Verstappen decides to leave Red Bull.
I think if Max Verstappen sprung into the marketplace, I would be quite worried for George. There are a lot of ifs and buts, but George is doing a great job as a team leader. However, Toto missed Max once, I don’t think that he’ll miss him a second time should he get the opportunity.
Verstappen has been with Red Bull since 2016, winning four championship titles during that time. His current contract with the Austrian team extends until the end of the 2027/28 season.
Russell has been driving for Mercedes since 2022 and achieved his first Grand Prix victory in Brazil, making him the first British driver to win a race for the team since 2012. After Lewis Hamilton's move to Ferrari, he has taken on the role of the team’s leader.
Additionally, former F1 driver Robert Doornbos expressed his belief that Verstappen is mentally prepared to leave Red Bull. In other news, the Dutch driver’s father harshly responded to a journalist’s speculation about his son’s potential move to Mercedes.
