For over two decades, Tadhg O’Shea chased the ultimate prize in Dubai racing—the Dubai World Cup. In 2023, he finally stood atop the podium, celebrating an emotional victory aboard Laurel River. That taste of success has only fuelled his hunger, and as the 2024 edition approaches, the Irish jockey is determined to add another milestone to his remarkable career.

This time, O’Shea faces a different challenge. With Laurel River sidelined due to a training setback, he must choose between two strong contenders from Zabeel Stables — Walk Of Stars and Imperial Emperor. Both have had standout moments, but inconsistency looms as a factor. The final decision will be made only after he puts them through their paces in the lead-up to the $12 million showdown on April 5.
“The Dubai World Cup was a dream come true, but once you’ve won it, you want it again. It took me long enough to get the first, so hopefully the second comes much sooner.”
A Legacy Written in the Sands of Meydan
O’Shea’s name is already etched into UAE racing history. With 12 UAE jockey championships and over 826 career wins, he is the most successful rider in the country’s history. Beyond the statistics, his reputation as a fierce competitor and dedicated professional has made him one of the most respected figures in the sport.
His credentials extend beyond Thoroughbred racing — he is one of only two jockeys to have won both the Dubai World Cup and the Dubai Kahayla Classic, the premier race for Purebred Arabians. His first major triumph came in 2008 aboard Mizzna, a victory that marked the beginning of his ascent to the top ranks of UAE racing.
Fast forward to last year, and O’Shea’s night at the Dubai World Cup meeting was nothing short of spectacular. He not only secured his long-awaited World Cup victory but also claimed the Dubai Golden Shaheen with Tuz. This year, he returns with six mounts, including Tuz, who is set to take on some of the best sprinters in the world.
Tuz has been an incredible horse for us. This year’s race is stacked with talent, but I believe he’s in even better shape than before. We’re going in with confidence.

The Unyielding Drive to Succeed
Despite his achievements, O’Shea refuses to rest on past glories. Currently trailing in the jockeys’ championship race behind Silvestre De Sousa, he has the Dubai World Cup meeting and two further fixtures in Al Ain and Abu Dhabi to turn the tables and claim a record-extending 13th title.
From the start, my goal was always to reach the top. Winning 12 titles is unbelievable, but I still have that fire to keep pushing.
O’Shea’s success is built on a foundation of discipline, hard work, and a relentless pursuit of improvement.
You need dedication, you need hunger, and you need to be willing to put in the effort every single day. That’s what keeps me going.
A Life Beyond the Track
Away from the high stakes of racing, O’Shea finds stability and support in his family. His wife Debbie and their two sons, Darragh and Aaron, are deeply involved in his career, following every race with keen interest.
“Having my family behind me makes all the difference,” he says. “My kids know every horse I ride, every race I’m in — it’s a special bond we share.”
As he prepares for another historic night at Meydan, O’Shea knows that success is never guaranteed. But if his career has proven anything, it’s that he thrives under pressure. With his sights set on another Dubai World Cup title, the champion jockey is ready to make history once again.
