Abu Dhabi: UAE national team head coach Paulo Bento has unveiled his 27-man squad for two pivotal matches in the Asian qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Al-Abyad (The whites) will first take on Group A leaders Iran on March 20 at Azadi Stadium in Tehran before facing North Korea in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on March 25.

This squad announcement marks a significant shift, with the inclusion of four newly naturalised players: Caio Lucas and Luan Pereira from Sharjah, Jonatas Santos from Al Wasl, and Alaa Al-Din Zuhair from Al Wahda. Their presence is expected to inject fresh energy into all areas of the team.
Additionally, key returns to the squad include Sharjah goalkeeper Khalid Tawhid and Shabab Al Ahli striker Sultan Adel, both recovering from long-term injuries. Al Jazira’s Abdullah Ramadan also makes his comeback, further strengthening Bento’s options.
Caio Lucas: The Missing Piece in UAE’s Attack?
Among the standout additions is Brazilian-born forward Caio Lucas, whose long-awaited inclusion could be a game-changer for the UAE’s attacking strategy.
With Al-Abyad struggling to convert chances in previous qualifiers, Lucas' clinical finishing and creativity are seen as vital assets. His track record speaks volumes: 20 goals and seven assists in 30 matches for Sharjah this season, directly contributing to over half of his club’s goals.
Lucas, who initially joined Al Ain in 2016 before stints with Benfica and Sharjah, has built a reputation as a versatile forward with a sharp eye for goal. His recent performances in the AFC Champions League and domestic competitions underline his ability to deliver under pressure.
This is an opportunity I have long awaited. The UAE has been my home for years, and I want to give back by helping the team in any way I can. I will do everything to make a difference in these crucial matches.
Brazilian winger Jontas de Santos (23) joined Al Ain Club in January 2020. After several successful seasons with the top club, he was loaned to Al Wasl this season, where he has been performing brilliantly. His impressive form has made him one of coach Paulo Bento's key options to strengthen UAE in their upcoming matches against Iran and North Korea.
Tunisian-Emirati defender Alaa El-Din Zouhair (25) joined Al Wahda Club in January 2020 and has since secured a regular place in the starting line-up. Known for his strong defensive performances and ability to contribute goals from set-pieces, Zouhair has established himself as a key asset at the back. His consistent displays boosted his chances of making the national team squad, addressing the defensive gaps that have cost Al Abyad crucial goals in recent matches.
Brazilian-Emirati midfielder Luan Pereira (24) has been with Sharjah Club for five seasons and is thrilled to be called up to the national team. After years of hard work and high-quality performances, his inclusion is well deserved. In the 2024-2025 season, Pereira has made 31 appearances, scoring nine goals and providing nine assists, further cementing his reputation as a key playmaker.
A Must-Win Scenario for UAE
Currently third in the group with 10 points from six matches, the UAE is locked in a fierce battle for direct qualification. They trail second-placed Uzbekistan by three points and hold a narrow lead over fourth-placed Qatar, making these upcoming fixtures decisive.
Iran, sitting comfortably at the top with 16 points, poses a formidable challenge. However, UAE is determined to avenge their 1-0 loss in the first leg and claim a crucial victory to boost their qualification hopes. A win against Iran would not only close the gap but also inject momentum ahead of their showdown with North Korea — a team known for its resilience.
With the stakes higher than ever, Paulo Bento’s men must deliver a performance worthy of their ambitions. Can UAE rise to the occasion and stake their claim for a spot at the 2026 World Cup? Well, the battle is slotted for March 20.
