The 2021 edition of the premier international LAN tournament takes place in Iceland and features 22 teams from around the world. Gen.G: An easy game for the Koreans

Gen.G Esports is a professional international eSports organisation. Gen.G is currently ranked 6th on Forbes’ 2020 list of the world’s most valuable eSports companies, formerly known as KSV eSports.

The KSV League of Legends team was formed on November 30, 2017, by acquiring Samsung Esports, which included 2017 world champions Samsung Galaxy. On August 27, 2020, Gen.G was announced as one of 10 selected teams under the League of Legends Champions Korea (LCK) franchise.

The team has never taken the LCK championship since Gen.G has played in the Korean championship. The highest ranking was 2nd place at the 2020 and 2021 Spring Splits. The boys finished 3rd in the summer tournament in 2021, so all in all, they’ve had a good year, with only a good performance at Worlds 2021 to back it up. This is the third Worlds tournament in the history of this team. They failed the first one. It was in 2018, and they got a place 13-16. The second tournament came for the Koreans in 2020 and turned out quite well, placing 5-8, the team can be pleased with themselves.

The group stage began with a game against the Chinese LNG Esports, who wiped them off the map without giving them even a few frags. The victory was clearly level, not a single mistake and an important 1-0 victory.

The second game was a real brawl, with the Koreans sensationally losing to MAD Lions (0-1). The intrigue in Group D was just incredible. Everyone confidently opposed the Koreans, but they secured a guaranteed place in the playoffs, and for first place, Gen.G fought with MAD Lions, with whom there was not much trouble.

Gen.G was unrealistically lucky with their opponents in the quarterfinals, so for them to drop out would mean the loudest failure in history.

Cloud9: Making the playoffs is already a sensation

Cloud9 is an American eSports organization. It has many line-ups in various eSports disciplines, including LoL.

Cloud9 started as a small League of Legends team. When they first qualified for the LCS, Jack Etienne, the current owner and general manager decided to elevate the team, and it has grown exponentially ever since. The team is a 4-time NA LCS champion, has been runner-up 6 times, and has been a Worlds semi-finalist once.

The Americans got off to a flying start at this Worlds, beating DetonatioN FocusMe (1-0) of Japan in their opening game of the Play-In. C9 was immediately regarded as a team to take part in group battles. Not without problems, but the Americans qualified for the group stage.

In the main leg of Worlds 2021, C9 was initially unable to put up a serious fight. Two defeats to Rogue (0:1) and the FunPlus Phoenix (0:1) left the Americans no chance of leaving the group, but a miracle happened! The boys started the decisive matchday 0-3, then came back with two wins, and in the tiebreak for the quarterfinals, the Europeans from Rogue were beaten.

Getting into the playoffs was a clear gift for the C9 team. The Americans shouldn’t have been in third place in the group and second with a 0-3 start... C9 was a dream come true for all group winners. It was the Koreans who had to knock this team out of Worlds 2021.
