Uruguayan forward Luis Suárez announced his retirement from the national team during a press conference, stating that his final match for Uruguay will be against Paraguay on September 6.
Suárez could barely hold back tears during the announcement:
I’ve been thinking about this and analyzing this. I believe this is the right time. I want to be relaxed when I play my last game with the national team. I’ll be just as excited to play as I was in 2007 when I played for my national team for the first time.
The 37-year-old forward has played 137 matches for Uruguay, scoring 68 goals and providing 39 assists. In 2010, Suárez and his team secured fourth place in the World Cup, and in 2011, they won the Copa America.
At the end of August, it was revealed that defender Kieran Trippier has also retired from the England national team.
