The press service of the Los Angeles Lakers, a National Basketball Association (NBA) team, announced that sports teams in California will contribute over $8 million to help address the aftermath of wildfires.

Since January 7, wildfires have been raging in Southern California, including the Los Angeles County area, fueled by lengthy drought and low humidity. The fires have burned approximately 16,000 hectares. President Joe Biden has declared a major natural disaster in the state. At least 24 people have lost their lives, and over 10,000 structures have been destroyed. Approximately 180,000 individuals have been evacuated.

On January 9, it was reported that the NHL regular season game scheduled between the Los Angeles Kings and the Calgary Flames has been postponed. There are also discussions about potentially rescheduling a game where the Lakers were set to host the Charlotte Hornets.
